Jaipur: On Saturday, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a confident 14-year-old cricketer, made history by becoming the youngest player to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He played for the Rajasthan Royals against the Lucknow Super Giants.
At just 14 years and 23 days old, Suryavanshi captured the audience's attention as he walked out to open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.
With a determined look, the left-handed batsman thrilled the crowd at Sawai Mansingh Stadium when he hit a massive six off the very first ball he faced, which was the fourth delivery of the opening over bowled by Shardul Thakur.
The ball soared over the extra-cover boundary, prompting a smile from injured captain Sanju Samson in the dugout.
Born on March 27, 2011, the same year India clinched the Cricket World Cup under MS Dhoni, Suryavanshi has played only five First-Class matches for Bihar in the ongoing 2024-25 season.
He made headlines during the IPL 2025 auction, becoming the youngest player to secure an IPL contract at the age of 13, when he was acquired by the Royals for ₹1.1 crore.
Suryavanshi has also represented India at the Under-19 level, notably scoring a century off just 58 balls in a four-day match against Australia Under-19.
Prior to Suryavanshi, the record for the youngest IPL player was held by Prayas Ray Barman, who debuted at 16 years and 157 days for RCB against SRH in 2019.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman also made his IPL debut at 17 years and 11 days for Punjab Kings against Delhi Capitals in 2018.
Riyan Parag, who captained RR on Saturday, is the fourth youngest player to have played for the franchise, debuting at 17 years and 152 days against Chennai Super Kings in 2019.
By hitting a six on his first ball, Suryavanshi joined an exclusive group of players, including Rob Quiney (RR), Kevon Cooper (RR), Andre Russell (KKR), Carlos Brathwaite (DD, now Delhi Capitals), Aniket Choudhary (RCB), Javon Searles (KKR), Siddesh Lad (MI), Mahesh Theekshana (CSK), and Sameer Rizvi (CSK).
